The Importance of Antiviral Medication...Safeguarding Against the Flu

Influenza can disrupt the lives of your patients. It can lead to several days of bed confinement and, for others, it can result in serious illness or even death.

Vaccination is the best line of defense against the flu. But when people do get the flu, treatment with antiviral medication is effective at reducing the duration of the flu. According to Dr. Whitley, “Early diagnosis is critical because treatment should be started within 48 hours of the first signs of flu.” He also recommends post-exposure prophylaxis for people who have been exposed to the flu, especially those at high risk of serious complications from the flu, such as the elderly and young children.
