Over half of all men in the United States develop symptoms of BPH, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, better known as enlarged prostate. Its main symptom of feeling like you have to urinate frequently can be very disruptive to daily activities and sleep for both men and their partners. Today, less invasive out- patient options using holmium laser energy to remove obstructing prostate tissue offers patients quicker recovery than traditional surgery, generally with few, if any, sexual side effects caused by alternative remedies.
“The majority of men once they get to the age of 50 will start to have enlargement of the prostate. The major advantage of minimally invasive surgical treatment as compared to Transurethral Resection of the Prostate is reduced recovery time and fewer complications following the procedure,” says Glenn M. Preminger, MD of Duke University Medical Center.
For an in-depth look at treating BPH, we speak with Glenn M. Preminger, MD of Duke University Medical Center, Lori B. Lerner, MD of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and a patient who has overcome BPH.
